How Does The Woodchuck Interact With Humans?

The woodchuck, or the groundhog as it is also known has long been living alongside humans in North America, but this relationship is not always a comfortable one. The most famous of all groundhogs is Punxsutawney Phil, who is the animal in the title of the film ‘Groundhog Day’.

Can The Woodchuck Be Dangerous To Humans?
In terms of their physical stature, the woodchuck is not a particularly large animal at under two feet in length when fully grown. This does include a stout body however, and the natural defense of the animal includes large thick claws and the large front teeth that are typical of these animals. They will look to avoid any conflict with Hartford bat removal humans if at all possible, but if their burrow is attacked they will respond aggressively and can deliver a severe bite with those large front teeth.

When compared with other wild animals, woodchucks carry a very low risk of transmitting diseases to humans, but as with any animal they can carry viruses and diseases. There aren’t any diseases that are particular to this Hartford bird control species that can be transmitted to humans, and although they can carry rabies the chances of a human being infected is very low.

One area where the woodchuck can cause Hartford rat control problems is if they are burrowing beneath the garden or even worse beneath the house. In the garden the tunnels can collapse with the pressure of someone standing on them, and this can cause some injuries. If they are able to burrow under a home then the woodchuck can in extreme cases undermine the foundations of the house.

Keeping A Groundhog As A Pet
There are quite a few people who are swayed by the cute appearance of the woodchuck and are keeping them as pets. The first Hartford snake removal problem that many owners will have to overcome is the natural tendency of a woodchuck to be aggressive, which means they will need a lot of time to train. Their large teeth combined with the tendency to aggression means that they are unsuitable pets for families with children, and a number of precautions will need to be taken before the home is suitable for the woodchuck to inhabit.

The majority of Hartford rodent extermination people who keep woodchucks will keep them in a cage in the garden, but because of their tendency to dig it is important to embed the fences a few feet into the ground, otherwise the animal will be able to dig its way out. For those who are thinking of keeping the woodchuck as an indoor pet, it can be a wise choice to use bare floorboards rather than carpets, and to avoid leaving areas of the home that you cannot see, as the woodchuck may try and dig through the floorboards. Some people who live in carpeted properties suggest that the carpets will need to be replaced annually.

Another Hartford raccoon removal problem that many owners will have when they are looking after their woodchuck is that it is difficult to source a natural diet for them. This means that they can either feed them a diet of alternative pet food or a mix of vegetables and other foods. It is possible to let them loose to forage for their own food, but this can be problematic because of the damage the woodchuck can cause to the average garden. It is also worth bearing in mind that getting veterinary care for a woodchuck can be difficult as very few will have experience of dealing with a groundhog.

The Continued Success And Growth In Groundhog Population
The woodchuck is a species that has proved itself to be particularly successful living alongside humans, and with the growth in population this interaction is likely to become even more frequent.
