About Rats: Appearance, Biology, Life Cycle, Habitat, Diet, Behavior
Rattus Rattus, a prehistoric rodent with incredible capability, adaptability and today being found almost every corner
of the world. First origins are being said from south East Asia and then got spread round the globe. They got their name
from Britain during the 18th century. Many species are known to humans and some of them disappeared and reappeared again.
These creatures have threatened mankind many at times. Also according to the Indian mythology rat is the vehicle of Lord
Ganesha and in some part of India rats are being worshiped also.
Appearance
Commonly known as rats, these small animals are found in many sizes and colors with a long tail like the ones that could
fit into a child’s palms to a size of a house cat whereas color varies from black, brown to white and so on. These critters
have comparatively bigger ears which could be easily seen as the ears are attached vertically on the head.
Biology
These rodents are responsible for many epidemics in the human history as their blood has the capability of carrying multiple
bacteria and viruses. These are intelligent and social animals. However because of their unclean and diseased blood rats are
part of daily diet of humans in many part of the world. The tail of the rats helps balancing their body and keep the body
temperate moderate. These could go without food and water for days also.
Life cycle
Life span of rats differs from species to species. 12 months to even 8 years known to humans. These creatures live under the
shadow of many predators who feed on them like snakes, birds and also humans. Predators are not the only threat to them as these
creatures are also threatened by many diseases which results fatal to them.
Habitat
Rats live almost everywhere and could sustain the extremes of the nature. These rodents live in the wild and among humans. Brown
or black rats live usually among humans, feeder rats are found in food storage areas where there is easy availability of food.
Rats are social, intelligent and like to stay in the company of other rats and that is one other reasons they do not mind staying
between humans also. The only place on earth where rats are not being found till date is Antarctica.
Diet
These creatures can adapt to extremes of conditions just because of their food habits. Rats are scavengers and could eat almost
anything such as grains, fruits, vegetables, flesh human waste, they could even chew down leather or fabric.
Behavior
Rats are social animals, they could show their mood by laughing or being depressed. These beasts have a tendency of caring for each other also.
